Make sure location is turned on for your phone and allowed for NeonRoute. On Android: Settings → Apps → NeonRoute → Permissions → Location → Allow while using the app. Precise location works best, but Approximate works too. In a browser, allow location when asked, or reset the site's permission in your browser settings. Then close and reopen NeonRoute. Being indoors can slow the first fix; step outside or wait a few seconds.
Directions need your location and an internet connection. For spoken turns, open More and turn on Spoken directions, and check your phone's media volume.
Tap the 📡 button on the map. Choose Hidden (default, nobody sees you), Public (people nearby see you) or Private (only your group sees you). Pick a display name, tick the agreement box and tap Save. A "Sharing live" bar shows while you share; tap Stop on it to go Hidden right away. Sharing only runs while NeonRoute is open. New people can take up to about a minute to appear.
In the 📡 panel, tap Create to get a 6-character group code, then send that code to the people you want in your group. They enter it and tap Join. Choose Private so only your group sees you. Group members show as green markers. Tap Leave to leave a group.
Open the Feed and tap + Post. Choose a photo or a short video (about 10 seconds, up to 1.9 MB). It is pinned where you are and disappears after 24 hours. Tap 🗑 on your post to delete it sooner.
When you are within about 400 m of an event, tap 📍 I'm here on its card to check in. The number shows how many people checked in during the last 4 hours. Check-ins earn 3 points.
Join a group, search a destination, then open Groups → Start group ride. Everyone in your group gets a notification and can tap Join ride to get directions to the same place. The ride card shows each member's distance and estimated arrival. ETAs for other members are estimates.
In Groups, tap Start safe walk and enter about how long your walk takes. Tap I'm home when you arrive. If you don't, your group gets an alert. SOS sends your current spot to your group right away. Your group sees alerts the next time they open NeonRoute. NeonRoute cannot call 911 for you. In an emergency, call 911.
Tap ☆ Follow on a person or event in the Feed. Updates appear under 🔔 on the map or in the Feed header. Notifications appear when NeonRoute is open. Phone push notifications are not available yet.
You earn points for reporting (+1), commenting (+1), checking in (+3) and posting (+3). See your badges and the weekly leaderboard for people nearby in Profile. Scores reset each week (Monday).
Tap 🎓 in the Feed and search your school. The Feed then shows events near campus first, with filters for parties, games and free food (based on event names and descriptions), and a Safe walk home button.
Brighter areas have more people sharing publicly or posting. It does not show private or hidden users.
Tap ⋯ on a person or post to block or report. Tap Report or Delete under a comment. In Profile → Safety, stand at home and tap Set home privacy zone. Live sharing pauses within about 300 m of that spot.
Paid boosts are coming soon. Event hosts can call us to ask about boosting an event.
Neon is NeonRoute's co-pilot. Tap the glowing orb on the map to talk or type. Neon can route you ("take me home", "navigate to Bond 45"), report hazards or police, drop a pin, start or stop cruise, switch truck mode, control music ("next song", "play jazz radio"), mute the voice, find your group ("where's my group"), message them ("tell my group I'm 5 minutes out"), start a group ride, suggest the best spots tonight, start a safe walk, and send SOS (with a 5-second cancel). It also gives heads-ups for reports and busy spots ahead, narrates places you pass in cruise, and remembers places you save. Answers are short while you're moving. Pick Chill, Hype or Professional at the top of the chat.
In the Android app (version 1.3 or later), open Neon and turn on "Hey Neon", then allow the microphone. While the app is open on screen, say "Hey Neon" followed by what you want, or say "Hey Neon", wait for the reply, then speak. Saying "Neon" while it is talking stops it. Hands-free listening pauses when you leave the app. In a web browser, tap the orb and the 🎙 button instead.
Neon runs on a free AI service, so each device can ask a limited number of questions per hour and per day. Basic commands like "report police", "next song" or "cruise on" always work, even offline.
Tap ⟟ Cruise on the map to drive in the 3D view without a destination. As you drive, cards pop up for things just ahead of you: road reports and hazards, events, posts, people sharing live, places you follow, and gas, food, coffee, sights and nightlife. Each item shows once, at most one card every few seconds, and cards disappear on their own. Tap Go for directions. Hazards and your group are also spoken unless you muted voice (🔊/🔇). Tap ✕ Exit cruise to stop. Music keeps playing.
Tap 🚚 Truck under the destination and enter your truck's height, width, length, weight and axle load, and tick Hazmat if needed. Your settings are saved on your phone. Truck routes try to avoid low bridges, weight limits and roads closed to trucks or hazmat, using OpenStreetMap data. That data is incomplete in many places, so always follow posted signs and your company and state truck-route rules.
Tap 🎵 on the map. My music plays song files from your phone (they are never uploaded). Radio searches free internet radio stations. YouTube plays a video or playlist link in the official YouTube player. Apps opens Spotify, YouTube Music or Apple Music. Music gets quieter while a turn is spoken. Use the mini player bar to pause or skip.
Your own songs and radio usually keep playing with the screen locked and can be controlled from the lock screen on most phones, as long as NeonRoute stays open in the background. YouTube stops when the app is in the background or the screen is off, because of YouTube's rules. Closing NeonRoute stops all music.
While navigating, tap the 🔊 button on the left side of the screen. It turns to 🔇 and stays muted until you tap it again. You can also change it in More → Spoken directions.
Tap the ⚠ button, then pick the type. You can add a short note. To report somewhere other than where you are, long-press that spot on the map. Reports disappear on their own after a while.
Open More → List your business or event, fill in the details and find the address on the map. New listings show as pending until they are paid for or approved. Events stop showing after they end.
Contact us using the phone number below with the listing name and address, and we'll update or remove it.
Get the Android app from the download page. NeonRoute also works in any phone browser at this site.
